چکیده

We derive lower bounds on the number of messages and the number of message delays required by a nonblocking fault-tolerant consensus algorithm, and we show that variants of the Paxos algorithm achieve those bounds.

Lower Bounds for Asymptotic Consensus in Dynamic Networks

In this work we study the performance of asymptotic and approximate consensus algorithms in dynamic networks. The asymptotic consensus problem requires a set of agents to repeatedly set their outputs such that the outputs converge to a common value within the convex hull of initial values. This problem, and the related approximate consensus problem, are fundamental building blocks in distribute...

Lower bounds on the signed (total) $k$-domination number

Let $G$ be a graph with vertex set $V(G)$. For any integer $kge 1$, a signed (total) $k$-dominating functionis a function $f: V(G) rightarrow { -1, 1}$ satisfying $sum_{xin N[v]}f(x)ge k$ ($sum_{xin N(v)}f(x)ge k$)for every $vin V(G)$, where $N(v)$ is the neighborhood of $v$ and $N[v]=N(v)cup{v}$. The minimum of the values$sum_{vin V(G)}f(v)$, taken over all signed (total) $k$-dominating functi...

Convergence Speed in Distributed Consensus and Control

We study the convergence speed of distributed iterative algorithms for the consensus and averaging problems, with emphasis on the latter. We first consider the case of a fixed communication topology. We show that a simple adaptation of a consensus algorithm leads to an averaging algorithm. We prove lower bounds on the worst-case convergence time for various classes of linear, time-invariant, di...

Two Absolute Bounds for Distributed Bit Complexity

The concept of distributed communication bit complexity was introduced by Dinitz, Rajsbaum, and Moran. They studied bit complexity of Consensus and Leader Election, arriving at more or less exact bounds. This paper answers two questions on Leader Election, which remained there open. The first is to close the gap between the known upper and lower bounds, for electing a leader by two linked proce...
